Maketu Waterfall Walk: Honest Guide to a Short, Underwhelming Stop

Maketu Waterfall Walk: Honest Guide to a Short, Underwhelming Stop

Why the Maketu Waterfall walk is not worth the drive for most people

The Maketu Waterfall walk is short, easy, and not worth going out of your way for.

That’s the honest version.

If you’re expecting a proper waterfall walk or anything close to a hidden gem, this will feel flat. It’s quick, accessible, and quiet, but the payoff doesn’t match the expectation.

If you’re already nearby, fine.

If you’re choosing where to go, there are better options.

Why the Maketu Waterfall walk isn’t worth the drive for most people

On paper, it sounds decent.

A short bush walk just off State Highway 1 leading to a secluded waterfall.

In reality, it’s a much smaller, quicker stop than that makes it sound.

Not bad.

Just not enough to justify the detour.

What the walk is actually like

You park near the cemetery, find the track, and head down a short bush path.

Within about 10 minutes, you’re there.

No real build-up. No variation. Just a quick walk in and out.

It feels more like a stop than a walk.

The waterfall itself

This is where it falls short.

The waterfall is small. Sometimes barely flowing. And the surrounding area can feel a bit muddy and slightly neglected.

It’s not terrible.

It just doesn’t stand out.

If you’ve done even a few decent waterfalls around Auckland, this one feels average at best.

Who this is actually for

Maketu only really works if you’re:

🔸 already passing through

🔸 curious

🔸 not expecting much

It doesn’t work if you want:

🔸 a proper waterfall destination

🔸 a more scenic walk

🔸 something worth driving for

That’s where most people get it wrong.

Is Maketu Waterfall actually worth it?

No, not really.

Not unless it’s convenient.

If you’re choosing between options, skip it.

Go to Hunua Falls instead

If you want something that actually delivers, go to Hunua Falls.

It’s bigger, cleaner, and actually feels like a destination.

Hunua Waterfall cascading into a pool surrounded by trees and rocks

It’s not even close.

If you want the full breakdown, our Hunua Falls guide covers what to expect and why it’s one of the better waterfall stops near Auckland.

The good

🔸 very short

🔸 easy access

🔸 usually quiet

The not-so-good

🔸 small waterfall

🔸 inconsistent flow

🔸 not especially clean

🔸 over quickly

🔸 not worth a dedicated trip

Real-world take

This is one of those places that sounds better than it is.

It’s fine.

That’s it.

If you’re trying to find better walks around Auckland

This is where being selective matters.

There are plenty of short walks and waterfall spots around Auckland that actually feel worth your time.

Hunua Falls is the obvious upgrade.

Shakespear Regional Park is a better example of an easy walk that still delivers properly and also has a waterfall too.

And if you’re building out a list of solid options, this is exactly the kind of track that helps define what doesn’t make the cut.

Final take

Maketu Waterfall is easy, quick, and forgettable.

If you’re already there, have a look.

If not, save your gas and go somewhere better.
